How Your Business Can Thrive During An Economic Downturn

I wanted to talk about something that I have been hearing a lot of chatter about in the blogging community.

This is coming from new bloggers as well as experienced bloggers. The past few days many bloggers seem to have taken a step back and are hiding in the shadows.

Are you one of them? Do you think that with everything going on right now, no one wants to read your blog or hear about what you have to say?

Do you see a decline in your pageviews and sales? Are you struggling with how to help your blog grow?

Maybe you are beginning to think it’s pointless. Many other businesses are giving up right now so maybe you should too.

If this sounds like you, I want to remind you that in 2008 we went through a similar experience. During that time, a lot of businesses were losing money and were forced to close, but at the same time, there were also a lot of businesses that were able to thrive.

In this post, I want to share with you, a few ways that you can grow your blog, beat the odds, and help your business thrive through this recession. These ideas will work for online businesses as well as brick-and-mortar businesses.

1. Think outside the box.

I’ve seen so many businesses in the last few days who are doing things a little bit differently in order to help their customers. One question you should be asking yourself is: What do my customers want right now? What do they need? What can I do for them? It may not be what you normally do, but if you really want to help your customers out and grow your business, you need to give your customers what they want.

Local shops and restaurants that have never delivered before are now providing delivery services. I’ve seen food blogs posting recipes using minimal ingredients or pantry staples. Gyms are doing online classes. DIY bloggers are sharing tutorials to make face masks and providing recipes to make your own cleaning products. Kids blogs… Blogs that share kids’ activities are blowing up right now! With kids out of school, there are sooo many parents looking online trying to find kids’ activities to keep their kids busy and occupied. If you have any sort of business that targets kids, you need to be figuring out a way to get your products to those parents who so desperately need them right now.

If you don’t have an idea right now, take a look at what others are doing. Any time you see a company doing something (anything!!) that people are responding to, ask yourself, how can I do something similar that will work within my niche and help out my customers?

2. Focus more on growing your audience than on selling products.

With so many uncertainties going on in the world right now, many people are hesitant to spend money on unnecessary items. Take advantage of this by looking for opportunities to grow your e-mail and social media channels. What kind of free products can you offer as an e-mail opt-in? What kind of posts are you seeing related to your niche that are getting a lot of shares and traffic on social media lately?

If you’re a local business, what can you do to help your community right now? What are other businesses in your area doing that is having a positive effect on the community? How can you do something similar within your own business?

What are you doing right now to help out your customers and grow your business? Leave a comment below to let me know what your business is and what you have been working on.

  1. Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Opera. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The layout look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon. Thanks
